Market values for well-preserved 1964 GTOs vary significantly based on factors like condition, originality, and demand. Typically, they can range from $30,000 to $70,000 or even higher for exceptional examples.
Pontiac GTO was exactly what car buyers coveted. Responding to the growing clamor, factory production was rapidly expanded. Total sales were 32,450 for the 1964 model year.
In his autobiography Glory Days, Pontiac chief marketing manager Jim Wangers, who worked for the division's contract advertising and public relations agency, states that John DeLorean, Bill Collins, and Russ Gee were responsible for the GTO's creation.
The most sought-after are Ram Air IV-powered Judges. But more specifically Judge convertibles. If there is a Holy Grail GTO it's the 1969 Judge Convertible with the Ram Air IV.
When supplied with the VIN of any Pontiac, PHS will produce the copy of the factory invoice or billing history for the car as well as a letter decoding its options. This is the only way to know if a 1964 or '65 GTO is authentic. And the service costs just $75 per car.
Goat became the single-syllable name for the Pontiac GTO. The original source for using Goat is unknown, as it quickly caught on. A number of sources attribute the name to a reversal of the last two letters in the GTO acronym (GOT) with a long vowel sound applied to the "O."
The car's name is a pop culture reference to “Here comes Da Judge,” a recurring catchphrase on the 1960s TV show Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. The Judge also made a cameo in the 1993 cult classic film, Dazed and Confused.
A GTO is basically a $2480 Tempest Le Mans with a $296 extra-equipment package that includes a floor shift, 389 engine, dual exhaust, stiffer shocks, "exterior identification" and a choice of super-premium tires or whitewalls.
The verdict is in. A jury of bidders awarded a rare 1970 Pontiac GTO Judge convertible a high bid of $1.1 million at the Mecum Auctions event in Kissimmee, Florida, setting a record price for both the model and the brand's production cars.
