Already fascinated by atlases, the ‘breakthrough’ happened with my seafaring father on a clifftop overlooking the English Channel. Our gaze was fixed on a cargo ship sailing away from its last port. First the hull, then the funnel, and finally its highest wisps of smoke disappeared over the horizon. That experience and understanding the geometry of sunsets and sunrises fueled an unfolding interest in all continents and their surrounding ocean.
