Bull with Wealdstone Enfield 2 Wealdstone 2 WEALDSTONE showed tremendous character as they staged a spirited comeback to keep their FA Cup dreams alive in this 1st round replay at Southbury Road on Tuesday night Dennis Byatt gave Stones the per feet start with a penalty after seven minutes when Neil Cordice was brought down by Keith Barrett Mark Graves then rattled the Enfield bar with a beautifully struck shot from an Alan Cordice cross- But Enfield then hit back throw ing everything bar the comer-flags at a resolute Stones defence When they did manage to pierce a solid rearguard they found Bob lies in superb form 4 again when defender p-Lammin lobbed the ball past hi St keeper Chris Merison To complete Lammin's trcrabl afternoon he fouled Don Lucas frc behind and the referee awarc4 penalty Ian Whitehead made take with the spot kick Conn third penalty of the season After Stones had absorbed more blows than a Frank Bruno opponent they were finally floored by two sucker punches early in the second half Lee Holmes levelled the scores with a header just 36 seconds after the break and put Enfield ahead five minutes later cracking home a Dave Flint cross Stones picked themselves ofT the floor however and showed true grit Wembley had to await until minutes from time before adding thei fourth McGonigle scoring his ond with a powerful header from Greg West corner Manager Alan Dafforn enthused was just the result looking for to put the lads frame of mind for the a meeting with Metropolitan Yeovil Town 0 Harrow Borough 1 IT TOOK George Duck just 67 seconds to write another glorious chapter in Harrow FA Cup story That was when he struck with the all important goal to sink Yeovil on their famous slope atHuish It was a fairytale start for Boro gracing the First Round Proper of the competition for the first time in their history They now entertain Third Division Newport County who beat Poole 3-1 in replay in the Second Round on December 10 David Pearce broke down the left and crossed to the near post for Duck to flick the ball past Yeovil keeper Kieron Baker In keeping with their great cup tradition the Somerset club making a record 36th appearance in the 1st round hit back with guns blazing Boro took a battering in the second 45 minutes but held their own as keeper Les Currell inspired a stirring performance from his back line In contrast Yeovil let their discipline slip resulting in a booking for Phil James and an ipjury time sending off of Jeremy Brown their most adventurous performer after a clash with Mick Garrini It was Brown who came the closest to scoring for Yeovil 1 1 minutes into the second half leaving a trail of Boro players helpless as he cut inside and unleashed a 25-yard shot that cannoned against the crossbar But this was to be day with manager Mike Tomkys enthusing: character of the players got saw us through Two ago I doubt if we could have handled the Tomkys was thinking back to the experience gained in last memorable FA Challenge Trophy run that saw Boro reach the semi- ere u' right 1 ophy on as they began to hit Enfield on the break And Mark Graves made sure the game went into extra time with a diving header after Brian Greenaway had wriggled his way to the by-line The best of the extra time chances went to Stones with Robin Wainwright and Dibble both going close But it was lies who kept Stones on the Glory Glory trail He did well to get down to an Ironton free-kick and then managed to get behind Paul Taylor's follow up But he saved the best till last taking ofT to tip a Keith Hayzelden free-kick over the bar WtaMitom: lies Banvick Perkins Byatt Bowgett Price Greenaway Dibble A Cordice Graves Cordice Sub Wainwright It was lies again who kept Wealdstone in the Cup on Saturday producing a string of world class saves to deny Ashford Tone Flint and Taylor in this 1-1 draw Mark Graves had given Stones the lead after just 40 seconds but Enfield hit back with a 70th minute equaliser from Dave Flint Wcatdsloac: lies Barwick Perkins By att Bowgett Price Greenaway Donellan Cordice Graves Wainwright Sub: Dibble The second replay will be at Lower Mead on Monday night with the winners away to Fourth DivisionCol Chester on December 10 After spirited fight back at Enfield on Tuesday night Stone manager Brian Hall said: am proud of them We showed a lot of character to come back away from home and we might have pulled it off We battled very well to come back Now we have got the home advantage for the second replay and we are looking forward to After Saturday's 1-1 draw Hall was full of praise for Stones eeper Bob lies He said: put us under a lot of pressure and once they scored we were under immense pressure But Bob lies had a tremendous game and pulled off a few world-class saves" George Duck who found the net after just 67 seconds sends this volley over the bar FA Cup party marred by a mindless minority of so-called Yeovil supporters Several arrests were made during and after the game as Yeovil fane clashed with police In a town better known for scrumpy than scrapping In a shameftd end to this cup ns referee Lester Shapter was attacked by a group of youths who then scuffled with poflee and officials at the entrance to the players tunneL The trouble started during the flrst half when a group of Yeovil supporters moved In on the 290 Harrow followers who had been segregated at one end of the ground Violence erupted as police stepped In One officer was left with blood pouring from a broken note and a police woman was kicked to the ground The Anal whistle provoked more trouble from the Yeovil thugs The Boro players went across to applaud their Jubilant supporters unaware of the sickening scenario that was unfolding behind them Referee Shapter from Torquay was hit and pushed after a group of Yeovil flans raced onto the pitch and he had to be escorted to safety by officials and police with a dog The Yeovil hooligans then rushed to the tunnel as heroes were disappearing into the dressing room There were farther disturbances outside the ground In a scene more akin to a Football League trouble spot than a sleepy Somerset town The Boro supporters were kept Inside the ground while police tried to clear about 200 Yeovil fans who had gathered In the street by the stadium Two youths were arrested and thrown In a police van after another clash with the officers Just yards from where I was standing The coaches were eventually brought round to the ground to frrry the Boro supporters to safety Later the Boro players had to cut short their celebrations to receive a police escort out of town The haraesed Somerset police had nothing but praise for the behaviour of the Boro supporters who never once became Involved in the dls-mrbances Boro Chairman Peter Rogers was sickened by the behaviour of the Yeovil fans who marred glory day are proud of the way our supporters and players behaved under considerable pressure They came out with tremendous credit very disappointing when you get that sort of trouble at a nonleague club not the sort of thing this club is used to I felt the police take control of the situation and Gary long throws in the second half I thought we had the better chances on the break and we should really have been two up at It was Earlsmead hero Duck who should have netted that second goal four minutes from half-time Ronnie cross was flicked on by Pearce but Duck volleyed his shot over an empty goal Harrow Borough: Currell Metz Forde Knight Howell uarrini Emmanuel Duck Pearce Manoe Nelion finals only to lose in dramatic fashion to Telford United after taking a 3-0 aggregate lead The much publicised slope did not concern Tomkys you do have to play within limitations but the pitch worry
